Breast amputation strikes horror and hushed tones among medical professionals and ordinary people alike.  It is generally assumed that the loss of her breasts will fatally injure a woman’s femininity and psychological wellbeing.

Doctors eagerly, even aggressively, offer breast reconstruction to women facing a mastectomy to “restore femininity.”

Reflections on the assumptions around this surgery, the pressure to conform bodily to the male gaze and what it means to be alive led to ANDROxGYNE.

We chose the classic genre of the black & white nude for the series partly as a tribute to George Dureau. The nude couple is a readily understood genre that here serves to normalize the breastless woman in a sexual context. The photographs work within the genre and push its boundaries at the same time.
