Meridith McNeal United States Painting

Inside Outside Filaments (Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, 2019 is a 75x55" watercolor on fabriano paper.  It is from my series Inside Outside Windowphilia which are large scale watercolor paintings which present a graceful confusion of reflections.

What tantalizes within each are the glances: what lies just outside the frame, around the corner or over the viewer’s shoulder. Every shop window contains not only its goods but layers of reflections. Every window that looks out onto a courtyard or cityscape also holds, suspended, something of the room from which the observer watches.  They are also a record of places I find myself; Brooklyn, London, Rome.  Most of all, these paintings—these windows, these stories—remind us to make no assumptions about on which side of the frame we stand. My windows illuminate in all senses of the word; they are conduits of light, vision—and knowledge.
